The group discussed our annual Christmas Party.  It was decided the group would go to Jack’s Steakhouse for a special Christmas Luncheon.  It was agreed that attendees at the luncheon would attend at their personal expense.  Christmas cards will be addressed.  A motion for approval of UMW’s Christmas Party plans was made by Elaine Beyl and seconded by Lucille Bender.  Motion passed.

Old business:  Election of officers.  Lucille Bender will continue as treasurer; Marilyn Hust agreed to continue on as secretary until she gets fired.  We have no president as Esther Colebank resigned as she has previously indicated.  She will continue to be the contact person for serving of funeral receptions which the group decided to continue.  Less formal meetings will continue.

As it was Vi Sebastian’s birthday, the group sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to her.

The purpose of the UMW was recited by all in attendance.

There was no meeting held in June, so the roll call question was, “What did you do that Tuesday when we would have had a meeting?” with eight women responding.

Devotions were led by Elaine Beyl from the UMW Devotional book based on Matthew.

Lucille Bender was called upon to present correspondence that had been received.  She then presented the Treasurer’s Report which was approved and adopted by all.

The UMW secretary was called on to present the minutes from last month’s meeting.  The minutes were approved as read.

New business:  The UMW Shepherdess was scheduled to attend the July meeting but was unable to due to a death in her family.  She is tentatively scheduled to attend the August meeting.  A picnic lunch is planned for the August meeting which will start at 12:00 noon rather than the usual time.

Old business: A short report was given on the Spring Focus gathering by those who had attended the event. We all agreed it was very interesting; the theme was “Forgiveness and Reconciliation’. Attendance was down this year from previous years. We ran ahead of schedule so everyone was dismissed by 2:00 pm. The muffins the Calvary UMW served were very well received.

New business: Those of us that served the recent funeral luncheon realized we should have called more persons to help. It was decided that if over 100 people are expected to attend, there should be a least six to eight people working.

The next agenda item was a letter from the UMW shepherdess stating she would like to visit our unit soon. An attempt will be made to contact and invite her to the July meeting.

A short discussion was held regarding the fall bazaar – should it be held or not. It was decided that if volunteers can be secured to prepare soup and carmel rolls the group will revisit the issue. Further discussion will be held at the next meeting.

Lucille Bender displayed a sample of ballpoint pens that will be given to the women of the church on Mother’s Day. Lucille volunteered to distribute the pens at the first service; and Edith Ruff and I volunteered to distribute them at the second service.

With no further business to discuss, the meeting was turned over to Mavis Hoffman who presented a short program on Mother’s Day and some recorded facts about the youngest mother, the oldest woman to give birth, and related information. Mavis presented those in attendance with a handout about the “History and Origins of Mother’s Day”. She also read bible passages referring to mother(s) – Proverbs 31:2 and 6:20. I served refreshments during the program.

There will be no UMW meeting in June as that is our summer break. The next meeting is scheduled for July 10. The program leader for July is Lucille Bender; Elaine Beyl is the hostess.

Roll call was then answered by the eleven women present.  A welcome was sung for two women who decided to join the UMW at this meeting.  We welcome both of these ladies to our group.

The Treasurer’s Report was presented by Lucille Bender and approved by her.  Vi Sebastian seconded the motion.  All were in favor and motion carried to accept the Treasurer’s Report.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved as read.  There was one correction; the meeting had no program leader, therefore, no program was presented.  Mavis Hoffman was the hostess, not the ones listed in the minutes from last month.  After the correction, the minutes were approved as read.

Spring Focus was the new business discussed.  It is going to be held on April 14 at McCabe UMC.  Registration is in the morning with coffee and rolls.  A lunch will also be provided at a cost of $8.00 per person.  A motion was made by Frieda that the UMW pay for all attending from our group.  Vi Almer seconded the motion and all were in favor; motion passed.  Those planning to attend were asked to contact Marilyn Hust so a count can be submitted to McCabe.

MINUTES FOR UNITED METHODIST WOMEN'S MEETING, FEBRUARY 21, 2012

The meeting opened with Esther Colebank presenting the program on Call to Prayer and Self-Denial.

Following the program, the business meeting was called to order by President Esther Colebank.  The purpose of the UMW was recited; devotions were led by Vi Almer from the UM devotional based on John 3:16.

Lucille Bender was called upon for communications and many ‘thank you’ items were read to the group.

Roll call was then answered by the nine women present.

The Treasurer’s Report was presented by Lucille Bender and approved by her.  Vi Sebastian seconded the motion.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved as read.  Elaine Beyl moved the minutes be approved; Vi Almer seconded the motion to approve the minutes.

Old business was discussed:  A new step stool was purchased for the kitchen.  The old step stool that is in bad shape needs to be disposed of so no one falls and is injured.  The rest of the money from the fundraiser needs to be dispersed.  As many from the church donate to the fundraiser every fall, it was decided to donate to the children’s program of the church.  Frieda Roth made a motion that the UMW donate $500 to the AWANA program.  The motion was seconded by Elaine Beyl, all were in favor; motion carried.  A motion was also made by Frieda Roth to give the Board of Global Ministries $385.  The motion was seconded by Vi Sebastian and all were in favor.  Lucille Bender suggested placing an article in the newsletter about Deb Schwab, daughter of Mavis Hoffman, who performs missionary work in Uganda.  The UMW makes a donation to this cause as the funds support immunization programs for children of the orphanage.

With no further business to discuss, the meeting adjourned.

The March program leaders will be Elaine Beyl and Frieda Roth; hostess will be Mavis Hoffman.

Respectfully submitted,

Marilyn Hust, Secretary

The Treasurer’s Report was then presented by Lucille Bender and approved by her.  Mavis Hoffman seconded the motion; all approved.

Discussion regarding distribution of Fall Bazaar proceeds followed.  The following was agreed upon:

·         Open Door Community Center - $300
